The war began on February 24, 2022 when Russia decided to invade Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
then ordered a general mobilisation to retaliate. On February 27, Russian troops pressed towards three cities, Kyiv,
Kharkiv and Kherson. Since then, according to the United Nations, 14,200-14,400 people have been killed from bombings,
shootings etc.
This is not the first time that Ukraine has been invaded by Russia either. In 2014, Russian forces had invaded
eastern Ukraine to claim part of Ukraine for Russia. The annexation was not recognised by the international community
but that territory has been controlled by Russia since 2014.
Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, claim it was to "demilitarise and de-Nazify" Ukraine. His aim was to protect those who were subject to eight years of bullying and genocide by Ukraine, according to Putin. It was later revealed that they also wished to ensure Ukraine's neutral status through this. Putin wanted to prevent NATO from expanding to Russia's borders and keep Ukraine out of Nato as he believed that Ukraine was fundamentally part of Russia in both the historical and cultural sense.
